Fall & Cover

Suzie Zeldin

The time is just passed four o'clock
and it's starting to get dark
Could it be time to break out a heavier coat
and wrap a scarf around my throat?
The laces drag aside my feet
The next few steps are all I really need to see
If I lift my eyes, the chill whips against my face
I let the landing of the leaves disturb my pace

And they fall and cover,
they fall and cover,
they fall and cover the ground

The neighbors children on the lawn
Are bundled up so they stay warm
They place hand in hand spinning and singing
"ashes, ashes, we all fall down"
Inside the war's on the TV
I watch the images of instability
Have four years gone by?
Time seems to fly as they stand straight and tall with their heads held up high

And they fall and cover,
they fall and cover,
they fall and cover the ground

Wake from your slumber although it's been sweet
Meet me at the river, we'll push passed the banks
Feel our feet breach the current but it doesn't save

But the dirt that collects on our souls will remain even after the sand on our toes
falls away

Behind the blinds the dancing snow
Then tap a pebble shocks the window
Down in the frost in wet winter clothes stands a boy
Who thinks he's all grown up
And it just might take all of my strength and all that I've learned
Just to say I will not go, no I will not go.
I won't go when the tears come

And they fall and cover,
they fall and cover,
they fall and cover the ground
