I Dreamed Of a River

Neal Morse

I dreamed of a river, oh how it did flow
It was fed by high mountains where no man could go
And the streams that fed it came straight from the sky
By the banks of this river God's children did cry

(Chorus)
The kingdom is now, come on let's go
There's healing and redemption where the cool waters flow
Don't you stay here in the desert so dry
Come drink from the water that comes from the sky

I dreamed of a river, it went 'round the bend
And there I saw a city that was greedy with men
And they poisened the river, it's purity gone
'Till no one remembered the original song

(Chorus)

I dreamed of a river, now a river of tears
God's people apressed for more than one thousand years
This city it grew, it changed times and laws
But a few still remember the original cause

(Chorus)

Well then came reformers who began to protest
They said by the river, that all could be blessed
The city it screamed, many saints it'd slew
But they never did learn that you can't kill the truth

(Chorus)

I dreamed of a river, amazed at the sight
After two thousand years oh, it came back to life
Straight from the high mountains, with heaven as it's head
And it feeds the whole world and gives life to the dead

(Chorus)

My brothers, my sisters, there's many a land
Where the water's still dead from that poisenous hand
Let's run to the desert, praying high as we go
And out of our bellies life's river will flow

(Chorus)
