Last Night

Mark David Manders

Hung over on the couch again
Feelin' like a fool don't you know I've been
Chasin' a dream and losing sleep
Just a victim of the hours I keep

In 29 days, I'll be 30 years old
Still ain't found a job that I can hold
But I've held on through thick and thin
To one thing that I believe in

Last night we had a pretty good crowd
They were tappin' their toes and singin' out loud
They heard every song we came to play
Well I lost track of time, but I suppose
We'd a played all night if that bar didn't close
Nights like that don't happen every day

I've played some dives where no one showed
I've made less than the bar tab I owed
Played for free and just for the booze
It's a little thing called payin' your dues

Those nights I got lost on my way home
And the nights I spent so all alone
Call on me from time to time
And end up in the words of a rhyme

I'd like to shut it down for a week
Rest up my voice, maybe get some sleep
But the chances of a vacation are slight
Tryin' to make a livin' playing music at night

So I spread my bills out on the floor
Choose the ones to pay and the ones to ignore
Tell myself it'll be alright
Pick up my guitar and begin to write
