In a Town Like This

Jeff Lang

In a town like this idle words turn black
Twist and turn behind your back
And before you know it slip through the cracks
And get taken as facts
She's been with one man now (going) on year 14
It's the devil you know, versus a life unseen
She may talk tough, but she laughs clean
And pure as a dance, but given half a chance
I'd kiss her neck sitting on the dunes
Hear the wind in her hair play its lonely tune
If I could do it all now it couldn't be too soon
For me to look her in the eye
And say I'm not gonna make any demands
I want you to take a place in my plans
Your ways, I can't say I'd understand
But I can promise that I'll try

This could all come to naught
Still I feel it's been worth the thought
'Cause hope can't be sold or bought
Like a shoe or an old guitar
Thoughts like days and years fly by
I may forget how she caught my eye
Still she made me whole for a little while
And that's more than some can say
I first met her in the sticks
She had mischief in her working its tricks
When I saw her I heard Hendrix
