You play this part by alternately strumming the bottom 3 and top 3 strings (in groups/pairs) on the headstock, above/behind the nut and fretboard. That's how Ian MacKaye produces that "ping-ping PONG, picka-ping PONG" sound during the chorus. To tab this experimental technique, I'll use an exclamation mark (!) to notate the rhythm of this guitar figure, see below: E|-----| !-------!-!!----!-------!-!|| B|-----| !-------!-!!----!-------!-!|| G|-----| !-------!-!!----!-------!-!|| x8 D|-!-!---!!!!!-----!-!---!!!!!----|| A|-!-!---!!!!!-----!-!---!!!!!----|| E|-!-!---!!!!!-----!-!---!!!!!----|| Post Chorus break Guy and Ian E|-----------------0*-------------| B|-----------------0*-------------| G|-----------------1*-------------| D|-----------------2*-------------| A|-2~--------------2*-------------| E|-----------------0*-------------| * = rest/staccato pause Second half of second verse breakdown Guy E|--------------------------------| | B|--------------------------------| | G|---------------------------1----| | x4 D|-------------------------3---3--| | A|--------------------------------| | E|--------------------------------| | Ian E|--------------------------------| | B|--------------------------------| | G|-----1-----1---------0----------| | x4 D|---3---3-2---2-1-1-1---1*-------| | A|--------------------------------| | E|--------------------------------| | Song ends with Chorus and Post Chorus Break.
