The River

i burn a candle at both ends
and i have to hold it the whole time.
my blood boils over into my hands
out of my eyes - most of the time
these things come in waves onto the sand
we slept on the beach so we would know.

i say a prayer after a while.
you say a prayer i say, "the river"
