Even a River

Carla Werner

Even a river runs somewhere
Home to the sea
I am not inside this face
So please stop staring at me
I will need saving from myself
Could you be there to save me?
When I need weight would you pick me up?
Put me back down on both feet
I'm not a river, I tell myself I'm not
For a river knows just how to be
I have been running in spite of myself
Like a river that needs to be free
Want to be taken some place else
Made to face up to the wall
And if I feel like I don't want to tell
Disregard it as nothing at all
Cos I'm careful needing
(As I'm) prone to bleeding
Over-thinking the way back
Got no sense of timing
Got no silver lining
But maybe I'm finally getting it
Haven't you already tried,
To raise some other side to me?
You know I don't mean to be rude
But you're standing inside my light blocking the view
It's not really you
Want to be taken some place else
Made to face up to the wall
And if I feel like I don't want to tell
Disregard it as nothing at all
Cos I'm careful needing
(As I'm) prone to bleeding
Over-thinking the way back
Got no sense of timing
Got no silver lining
But maybe I'm finally getting it
Even a river, runs somewhere
Home to the sea
I am not inside this face
So please, stop, staring at me
