Black Umbrella

Aaron Thomas

I walk beneath the black umbrella
Through the stink of piss and unwanted dinners
These woeful streets are all thrown together like bones

And the city heaves and it spits in the gutter
It empties its pockets right into the river
I’ve got no idea how we’re all not six feet underground

So come on baby
The world is fast asleep let’s run
And let the others carry own
Their drunken conversations

I know you’re crazy
But so is everyone I’ve know
And if you only live a short walk home
Then you don’t have to
Walk alone

I'm stuck between the teeth of this rotting factory
No one looks at me and no one’s friendly
I try to leave but they pay me by the hour down here

And there’s no room for living so I sleep in the kitchen
I’ve got my right eye opened and my left one twitching
I'm all curled up with a book ‘on how to disappear’

So come on baby
The world is fast asleep let’s run
And let the others carry own
Their drunken conversations

I know you’re crazy
But so is everyone I’ve know
And if you only live a short walk home
Then you don’t have to
Walk alone

I walk beneath this black umbrella
With my frozen teeth in this awful weather
There are dogs of the street all huddled together like stones

I got caught by the flash from a tourist camera
Set a light like an angel or burnt like a sinner
Well it doesn’t really matter cause we all know where I'm gonna go

So come on baby
The world is fast asleep let’s run
And let the others carry own
Their drunken conversations
I know you’re crazy
But so is everyone I’ve know
And if you only live a short walk home
Then you don’t have to
Walk alone
